Farmers Market celebrates summer

Rod Wilson

Cathy Littler and her daughter Liz Martin (foreground) demonstrated the art of belly-dancing at the Cranbrook Farmers Market Saturday, and even helped some young enthusiasts check out the techniques. Littler and Martin were two of the many entertainers down at the market.

The powers that be were kind to farmers and patrons at the Cranbrook Farmers Market on Saturday. The Friday evening thunderstorms had cooled the air and on Saturday the weather was sunny and warm (not too warm) and the patrons were out in full force. The organizers were determined to celebrate the summer with a full slate of merchants, games, buskers and belly dancing.

Cathy Littler and her daughter Liz Martin demonstrated the art of belly dancing and managed to coax some young ladies to get up and try. Of course the big attraction for the girls was all the “spangley and jangley bits” on the costumes. They were joined later in the morning by Joel Purdy on Djembe and tambourine and Darcy Wood on guitar. Darcy is from Calgary and is a member of the band “Unsuspecting Smile”. Further north in the market Rod Wilson entertained the passing crowd with lots of songs and tunes on Mandolin and Cittern. And then a little further on young Angus McDonald on fiddle was delivering a choice selection of fiddle tunes. The entertainment and games was a lively backdrop to the brisk trading that is part and parcel of a Farmers Market.

Need some fresh local produce and products? Need to enjoy the sunshine? Need to chill out and relax? Then remember The Cranbrook Farmers Market, every Saturday morning, on 10th Avenue South, adjacent to the post office and Rotary Park.
