Neighbourhood of Learning essential for Cranbrook

Let us take a moment away from the hubbub surrounding the East H

The “Neighbourhood of Learning” concept proposed by the School District to replace the old high school is almost revolutionary in its simplicity. More than just a new, top of the line educational centre for our children, the replacement for decrepit old MBSS would indeed be new downtown neighbourhood — one focused on the fundamental values of this community. The development would include capacity for community partnerships with, for instance, the IHA, the RCMP, Community Connections Society, the College of the Rockies, and many more. A youth centre for arts, day care services, counseling facilities, senior and family services — such services would make this development a ground zero for what makes Cranbrook great.

We advance the hypothesis here that there’s nothing like quality schools to really attract new residents — families who want to establish permanent roots — to help Cranbrook grow. We also suggest that this “most inclusive, innovative and versatile education delivery system available in B.C.” (to quote School Board Trustee Chris Johns) would help spark a dynamic revitalization of downtown Cranbrook.

We’re not being overly enthusiastic here. This project seems to be getting lost in the current noise. Several key factors are already in place, now we need action in Victoria. Lobby your MLA, the Premier and the Ministry of Education. This is important.
