RCMP arrest man for parole violation

Cranbrook RCMP arrested a man wanted by the Kelowna RCMP on a Parole Violation Warrant on Thursday. John Garry Shank, 31 was arrested at 3:30 a.m. Nov. 19 along with a second male who was arrested for Obstructing a Peace Officer.

After receiving a tip from Kelowna RCMP that Shank was in the Cranbrook area, Cranbrook police began scouring the area and circulating a photograph of the violator. Those efforts were rewarded when a local citizen directed them to a residence on King Street.

When RCMP arrived at the location they were met at the door by the second male who denied Shank was at the residence and lied to the police about his own identity. The male allowed police to enter the residence where Shank was located and arrested without incident.

Police also located a loaded assault rifle inside inside the residence.

Shank, who has a lengthy criminal record, will be turned over to parole authorities and likely returned to prison. Crown Counsel will be reviewing charges that police have recommended against the second male, who name cannot be revealed until charges are actually laid.

Police say several factors played into their favour and enabled them to apprehend Shank quickly. They would like to thank the public for their assistance in removing a violent criminal from the street.
