Cranbrook’s Tom Shypitka will be representing B.C. at this year’s Tim Hortons Brier in Halifax.
He will do so as vice-skip to Kelowna’s Jeff Richard, whose rink was perfect through the weekend’s playoff at men’s curling provincials in Vernon.
Richard dethroned B.C. champion Sean Geall in the final yesterday. Richard scored two in the 10th end to tie the score at eight, and then stole the winning point in the 11th.
Richard finished the round robin at 6-3, good for third place. He had to dispatch a pair of fellow Kelownans to reach the final.
His rink topped Bob Ursel 8-6 in Saturday night’s semi-final. That game also needed an extra end after Richard scored one in the 10th to knot proceedings. His team then scored two in the extra frame.
Shypitka’s side opened the playoff with a 5-3 win over Bert Gretzinger on Saturday morning.
Kimberley’s Tom Buchy finished provincials with a 2-7 record, finishing off with a 7-3 win over Richmond’s Greg McAulay on Friday morning.
Other teams to qualify Sunday include Brad Gushue (Newfoundland and Labrador), Glenn Howard (Ontario) and Kevin Koe (Alberta).
The national championship runs March 6 to 14 in Halifax.
