Slovenian Olympians visit Cranbrook

As the last few days of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics begin, many people are glued to their televisions to catch all the action. Frank’s Steak and Schnitzel Haus got a taste of the Olympics in person though.

Last week members of the men’s Slovenian snowboard team stopped at the Cranbrook restaurant on their way to training.

“They heard about us in Vancouver and they had to go to Panorama to train so they made a special stop here at Frank’s to come and say hello to us,” said Andreja Scanland who owns the restaurant with her husband Bob and her parents, Frank and Iva Matjaz.

Frank and Iva are originally from Slovenia and you will see the country’s emblem throughout the restaurant.

“They were pretty honoured to be here. We have the Slovenian emblem on pretty much everything in our restaurant so they were taking lots of pictures,” Scanland said. “They couldn’t believe a restaurant in Canada had so much Slovenian in it.”

Scanland said it was a pleasure to visit with the young men.

“I speak fluent Slovenian so I could talk to them and they spoke good English too. They gave me a Slovenian Olympic toque as well as Slovenian Olympic pins,” she said. “They spent more time with my mom and dad because my mom and dad are originally from there and they were talking about the Old Country.

“They were very nice people. They asked me how it is to live in Canada because of course, it’s tougher over there. I told them everything is good, awesome in Canada.”

Scanland said they have quite a few clients who fly in from Vancouver to come and have dinner at Frank’s.

The members of the team stopped back into Frank’s on their way back to the Olympics on Tuesday. They will compete on Saturday and Scanland said they will definitely be following the competition to see how they do.
