A different perspective on the holocaust will be laid out for viewing tonight in the Sunrise Rotary Rockies Film Series presentation of “Inside Hana’s Suitcase” 7 p.m. at the Columbia Theatre.

The film traces the poignant story of two young children who grew up in pre-World War II Czechoslovakia and the tragedies they endured just because they were Jewish. The film is based on the internationally acclaimed book of the same title which has been translated into 40 languages.

In addition to following the lives of George and Hana Brady in the 1939’s and 1940’s “Inside Hana’s Suitcase” tells the present-day story of “The Small Wings,” a group of Japanese children and their tenacious teacher who helped them solve the mystery of Hana Brady, whose name was painted on an old battered suitcase they received from Auschwitz.

Tickets will also be available soon for the 13th Anniversary edition of the Rockies Film Festival, an annual community cultural event and fundraiser. The popular annual event will run March 25 through 27 at the Columbia Theatre.

These are the films: Thursday March 25, 7 p.m. The Young Victoria, 9 p.m. Prom Night in Mississippi. On Friday March 26 the 7 p.m. showing will be The Last Train and at 9 p.m. An Education. On Saturday March 27 four films will be shown, starting with Shine of the Rainbows at 1 p.m., The Owl and the Sparrow at 3 p.m., Me and Orson Wells at 7 p.m. and Broken Embraces at 9 p.m.

Money raised by the Rockies Film Festival goes to a number of charities and good causes funded at least in part by Rotary. The Club sends one high school student on an international exchange every year and hosts another international student here. As well, the club sponsors two post-secondary students every year for the $4,000 Rotary Leadership Award.

Rotary members assist with many community projects including the just concluded Art and Wine Auction, the Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale and fundraises for donations made to the East Kootenay Foundation for Health.

The club also ships books and medical equipment to Third World countries and participates in Rotary International’s Polio Eradication Campaign as well as assisting with the establishment of micro-banks in the Philippines and Bolivia.
