I wish to thank the Cranbrook Club of the Canadian Federation of University Women for declaring me 2010 Woman of the Year. Being chosen for this award is indeed an honour, as I know there are many women in our community as deserving as myself.
Thank you to those who sent in letters with such kind words about me while saying nothing about my shortcomings! I understand that I must continue to live up to this honour and therefore shall be kept very busy.
I feel that it is necessary that I correct a couple of things that were in the article. I know that everything was written for the best of reasons but in the interest of accuracy (and the fear of some over ripe tomatoes being sent my way) I will correct the errors.
Firstly I did mention 90% of volunteers being women but that pertained to members of the Cranbrook Health Care Auxiliary only. I know that there are many men who volunteer in clubs, coaching, schools, and various organizations. That 90% of our volunteers in Cranbrook are women is certainly not the case.
Secondly while I have worked with Rotarians at the Wine Tasting Art Auction event I was not a chair or planner. The two years that I have been part of this event the chairs were Ron Popoff, Carrie Schafer and Doug Vanhooren and they deserve credit for their hard work. Whew, maybe I won’t be fined too much at our next Rotary Meeting.
Lastly I did attend the first public meeting of Abreast in the Rockies but the founders were Barb Whyte, Diane Leiman, Diane Hunter, Dauneen LeRose Mona Mahovlic, and Nancy Savarie. These women were determined to start a Dragon Boat Society in Cranbrook and I remain grateful that they did.
Thank you again for the overwhelming story and all of the kind words. To be the recipient of such an award is certainly a great privilege.
