    Crash sends SUV soaring

Two women were taken to hospital Sunday following a high-speed collision that ended with an SUV being knocked through the air into a downtown business.

Emergency responders were called shortly after 10 a.m. when a northbound Jeep collided with the eastbound SUV in the intersection of Third Avenue and Seymour Street.

Stephanie Turner and Melissa Messere were travelling beside the SUV on Seymour. Turner said the SUV accelerated toward the light when it turned red.

“She sped up ahead of us. The light was still red when she went through (the intersection),” said Turner. The Jeep slammed into the SUV’s passenger side and the vehicle was knocked into the air.

Witness Dave Guinn said he heard the impact and turned to look. He saw the vehicle sail into the Autoplan building and crash to the ground.

He and Karen Cerniuk ran to help. Cerniuk said the driver was talking on her cellphone as she and Guinn pulled her from the vehicle.

Messere said she didn’t see the woman talking on a cellphone while driving.

“She was just bobbing her head to the music,” she said.

The woman driving the Jeep got out of her vehicle and hopped around on one foot. Guinn said she was loaded into an ambulance.

Police rerouted traffic from Third Avenue onto Seymour while paramedics tended to both drivers. One eastbound lane of traffic was closed on Seymour for a couple of hours while crews cleared the wreckage.

RCMP did not report any significant injuries and there was no word on charges by late Sunday afternoon.

LB6, Thanks. You're (obviously) correct! Hopefully, this law will be effective.
To kitty_kat - no worries. Sometimes I hit "POST..." once, but it still puts up multiple posts. (Interesting note: 30 years ago, the whole digital/computer stuff was considered "Rocket Science".)

I can read and guess what I am skill at more than just the basics when it comes to operating a computer. It is also not BIOCHEMICAL SCIENCE to be a little less rude to those posting on the website.

Yes I am aware kitty_kat. Maybe the FIRST thing the person did was get out her cell phone and phone somebody after being in an accident. If she had her wits about her to do that, I would question why she wouldn't check on the people she ran into (in case that call should have been to 911). They will be able to tell if she was or wasn't on the phone. If she wasn't, that's fine - although she STILL ran the light (she sped up I believe witnesses said).
But you're right, I wasn't there. In any event, I am still hoping the "no-cell phone" law gets to BC before too many people get hurt.

To all newbies, follow posting instructions, refresh your screen after a post instead of clicking on "post your comment" multiple times. It's not biochemical sceince.

Ok, first off the witness says they did not see her talking on her cellphone when she passed them, so one cannot assume she was on the phone.

Two did you happen to drive by the scene of the accident Sunday, because what the article neglects to tell you is that the vehicle in question was a Toyota RAV 4. As of lately those vehicles have been known to take off on their own or for that matter not stop when the brake is used. So before anyone can judge this individual a complete mechanical inspection of the vehicle is going need to be done.

I did witness the aftermath of this accident as we were downtown shortly after it happened and I am just happy to know that the individuals in the vehicles were not hurt, and for that matter that no one was on the sidewalk and injured by the flying vehicle or debris.

Here we go... If it turns out she WAS on a cell phone while running a red light, I hope ICBC kicks her stupid butt to the curb and she has to pay all costs.
She could have killed somebody. If I have been cut off or had to slam on my brakes at least a dozen times in the past year to avoid a driver (on a cell phone) who misses a light or stop sign, I'm sure many others have.
The law of "No cell phones while driving" is sweeping across the country, it's likely just a matter of time. I just hope we don't have to see too many people (including children) killed before it happens here.
