    Crash sends SUV soaring

Two women were taken to hospital Sunday following a high-speed collision that ended with an SUV being knocked through the air into a downtown business.

Emergency responders were called shortly after 10 a.m. when a northbound Jeep collided with the eastbound SUV in the intersection of Third Avenue and Seymour Street.

Stephanie Turner and Melissa Messere were travelling beside the SUV on Seymour. Turner said the SUV accelerated toward the light when it turned red.

“She sped up ahead of us. The light was still red when she went through (the intersection),” said Turner. The Jeep slammed into the SUV’s passenger side and the vehicle was knocked into the air.

Witness Dave Guinn said he heard the impact and turned to look. He saw the vehicle sail into the Autoplan building and crash to the ground.

He and Karen Cerniuk ran to help. Cerniuk said the driver was talking on her cellphone as she and Guinn pulled her from the vehicle.

Messere said she didn’t see the woman talking on a cellphone while driving.

“She was just bobbing her head to the music,” she said.

The woman driving the Jeep got out of her vehicle and hopped around on one foot. Guinn said she was loaded into an ambulance.

Police rerouted traffic from Third Avenue onto Seymour while paramedics tended to both drivers. One eastbound lane of traffic was closed on Seymour for a couple of hours while crews cleared the wreckage.

RCMP did not report any significant injuries and there was no word on charges by late Sunday afternoon.
