Spring has sprung and Cranbrook RCMP would like to remind motorists it's also spring break for local students and many of them will on the roads and in the crosswalks over the next two weeks.
“As drivers, the road has to be shared with other drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. Therefore you need to be extra cautions and courteous to others and drive smart by slowing down,” says Cst. Lisa Schlatter of the RCMP Community Policing and Crime Prevention Department.
When planning an outing be sure to give yourself enough time to reach your destination. Keep in mind that traffic volume increases with warm weather. Avoid distractions such as cell phone use which is now illegal under the Motor Vehicle Act and carries a $167 fine.
RCMP Sgt. Einor Jorgenson of East Kootenay Traffic Services says no numbers are available yet but compliance to this point with the new cell phone law appears to be good. However, the next two months will tell the story, he says.
“I would suggest that March and April is going to really tell the story. With the good weather we will be stepping up our static observational enforcement, which will likely identify more people still using devices. From a personal stand point, I must admit that I am not seeing device use nearly as much as it was prior to the legislation.”
Meanwhile Schlatter says March 8 marked the beginning of spring break and there's going to be many more people, especially students, on the roads and motorists should exercise more caution.
“Road safety may not be the first thing on their mind. So please be cognizant of your speed and watch out to ensure our children make it to their destinations safely.”
Another thing to keep in mind is that school zone speed restrictions are still in place over spring break and only cease during the summer vacation. You should also keep in mind that the speed limit on City streets is 50km/h unless otherwise posted like Cranbrook Street North which is 60 km/h.
School and playground zone restrictions are in place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the minimum fine for an infraction in either zone is $196. Schlatter says the message from police is,” enjoy the warmer weather but be sure to share the road, slow down and be safe.”
