Cranbrook was well represented among medaling athletes at the B.C. Winter Games, which wrapped up Sunday in Terrace.
Locals accounted for half of the 16 medals Zone 1 athletes brought back to the Kootenays — and both of its golds.
Archery was the most bountiful sport, with four local athletes making it to the podium. Kaitlyn Gagne led the way with gold in girls’ match play and silver in the two-day aggregate.
Adam Pitney earned two silvers — one in each event — while Brittany-Rae Johnson and Tucker Tschetters brought home bronze in the aggregate and match play respectively.
Gymnast Leanne Perrich struck gold in the floor exercise, while the female hockey team overcame a 3-1 deficit in the bronze medal game to defeat Vancouver-Squamish 4-3.
Daley Oddy and Ashley Oddy scored 10 seconds apart in the third period to help seal the deal.
Other Cranbrook girls on the team include Jordyn Lee, Emily Scheller and Kelly Yuill.
“We’re just so proud of the girls. They worked hard, they really wanted this and they showed they could come back from a deficit,” assistant coach Kim Westergaard told the Terrace 2010 News Service.
Another area athlete to step onto the podium was Ta Ta Creek cross-country skier Steven Coueffin, who won a silver medal in free technique, and another in classic.
Jaffray’s Katie Anderson earned bronze in judo, competing in the women’s over 63-kg category.
The Fraser Valley (Zone 3) finished the Games with the highest overall medal total, with 103.
Thompson Okanagan (Zone 2) got one more gold than Zone 3, finishing with a Games’ high 35.
