The Cranbrook Ice will be playing for bronze when the Tier II midget provincials wrap up today.

The locals lost 3-1 to Mission yesterday evening at Memorial Arena. Earlier in the day, Surrey secured a spot in the gold medal final with a 4-2 win over Westside.

The championship game starts at 4 p.m., while the bronze game gets underway at 1 p.m. Both matches are at the Cranbrook Rec Plex.

Yesterday, Mission got out to a 1-0 lead two minutes from the opening puck drop, thanks to a goal from Mark Ferguson.

The Ice had a pair of great chances to score in the second period, but couldn’t put the puck in the cage. Mission came back to score a big goal less than a minute before the intermission.

Cranbrook got back in striking distance, with Ferguson off for a butt-ending double minor. Connor McLuckie scored on the power play at 14:11.

The Ice pulled their goalie late in the game, and the visitors scored into the empty cage with 52 seconds left.

Both of today’s games have precedents in the tournament, as Mission beat Surrey 7-1 in round robin play with a combination of timely goals and strong goaltending.

Cranbrook lost 4-2 to Westside on Monday.
