Yet another scam has surfaced on the Internet locally, say the Cranbrook RCMP.
In the latest attempt at scamming, a local man advertised a vehicle for sale on the Internet. He received a response from an out-of-country buyer and agreed on a price. The purchaser sent a money order that was several hundred dollars more than the asking price and received another request to send the extra money back to the sender.
This caused the intended victim to become suspicious and he called the police. Luckily no money was lost.
As a result, Cranbrook RCMP is warning the public to be cautious when buying or selling things on the Internet. Quite often the point of origin is out of the country, making investigation difficult, if not impossible. In these situations, there is rarely any recovery of the scammed money.
If you still decide to do business on the Net, make sure the money being sent is transferred into your bank account is “cleared” by the bank. This allows the bank time to ensure the money order is properly processed.
Another thing to keep in mind is to always be suspicious when you're offered more than the agreed on price.
