Saskatchewan art on canvas and cloth

The Key Gallery's upcoming art show is a collaboration between a mother and a daughter. Saskatchewan Art on Canvas and Cloth opens Monday, April 19th and will be on display until Monday, May 10th.

This is the first time Marilyn Malo and her daughter Lori Malo Tourscher have joined together to present a show of their work.

Marilyn began painting in the early 1970s, first with oils and then switching to watercolours and working exclusively in that medium for 35 years.

Marilyn has made painting her full-time profession. She takes her inspiration from the Saskatchewan landscape she knows so well and her realistic paintings express a sense of nostalgia for the heritage and culture that surrounds her.

“In the last few years I've started doing more experimental work and plyaing with acrylics,” she said. “For this show I've returned to my buildings, but with acrylic on canvas with palette knife and bright strong colours. I have also included a few of my traditional watercolours.

“I hope you enjoy the show as much as I have enjoyed ‘playing' with my paints.”

She has painted realistically doing house portraits, farmyards, cupboards, still life, lace and quilts.

Her art is in numerous corporate and private collections including the Saskatchewan Arts Board Permanent Collection and she has done many commissions.

Marilyn's prints have been featured at The Back Door in Kimberley for several years.

Lori began sewing at a very young age under the guidance of her mother and has continued her love of working with fabric into her adult life and is now a premier quilter in Saskatchewan. She has been a feature artist in quilt shows in southern Saskatchewan.

Her quilts and wall hangings incorporate her own designs and her talent with the needle and thread creating textile masterpieces.

Everyone is invited to attend the reception on Monday April 19 from 5 until 7 p.m., where they will be able to meet Marilyn. The exhibit can be viewed at the Key Gallery in the Key City Theatre from Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and on Saturdays between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
