Bear breaks in, burgles bread

A hungry bear is an opportunist, and one took advantage of an opportunity presented in Townsite in Kimberley Monday evening.

The bear, described as a brown bear, climbed through the screen door window of a home in Lois Creek says Kimberley RCMP Const. Tom Kochanski. Luckily no one was home.

“He crawled through an open window,” Kochanski said. “There was no one inside. He didn't even do any damage and got back out by himself. He was seen eating a loaf of bread outside later.”

Conservation Officers attended the scene as well and a trap has been put out.

This is an early warning to start thinking about bear smart behaviour, says Shauna McInnis of Bear Aware.

“This bear was looking for food. They're really hungry right now. They've lost 30 per cent of their body weight over the winter.

“He was passing through and he smelled food. Bears don't differentiate. This one was quite brave, he probably walked past the house a few times. He wasn't going after a person or an animal. He was just after an easy food source. He broke through a screen on a door and the big door wasn't latched so he just pushed it open.”
