The City of Cranbrook is going forward with the Alternative Approval process in order to obtain elector approval to proceed with the College of the Rockies Gold Creek Campus south boundary extension.
Mayor Scott Manjak said the City extended services out to the property last year.
“We told them the only way we would provide those services is if they became part of the community because that’s our policy — we do not extend services past our municipal boundary,” he said. “They agreed to that and we all agreed at that time because of the east hill boundary extension going on it would be prudent to let that process play out and they said they would come back in the new year and make that application and that’s where we’re at.”
On July 27 the City received a memorandum from the Ministry of Community and Rural Development with respect to the boundary extension proposal that authorized the City to proceed with statutory advertising and the elector approval process.
Council can go ahead with the boundary extension if less than 10 per cent of eligible electors in Cranbrook sign and return elector response forms to the Corporate Officer by 4:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 27. If 10 per cent of the Cranbrook population (or 1,435 people) return elector response forms the City must obtain the assent of the electors. The elector response forms are available through reception at City Hall.
