Kootenay’s Shaw moving on to AHL

The shuffling behind the Kootenay Ice bench isn’t quite over after all.

The Western Hockey League team’s athletic trainer for the last three years, Brad Shaw has been hired to join the Grand Rapids (Mich.) Griffins’ staff.

The American Hockey League Griffins — farm club to the Detroit Red Wings —announced the move today.

The Ice, in turn, announced they had hired Marty Palechuk. The Smoky Lake, Alta. native was head athletic trainer and equipment manager for the junior A Drumheller Dragons last season.

It’s been a summer of great change for the Ice.

Since the end of the 2009-10 season, head coach Mark Holick has been hired by the AHL Syracuse Crunch, and replaced by assistant coach Kris Knoblauch. The other assistant, Scott Beattie then took an associate coaching gig with the Tri-City Americans.

Earlier this month, the Ice announced that Todd Johnson and Jerry Bancks were hired as new assistants.

The Kootenay coaching corps last underwent such a large overturn in 2007, when, in sequence, trainer Darcy Ewanchuk, assistant Brad Lauer and bench boss Cory Clouston all moved on. Shaw, Knoblauch and Holick became their replacements.

CHARITY GAME

The Kootenay Ice will hold their annual training camp wind-up charity game Monday, Sept. 6 at 11 a.m.

The Blue-White Intrasquad game will once again benefit the Cranbrook and Kimberley United Way. That organization has received almost $23,000 in proceeds in the match’s 11-year existence, according to the Ice.

The Blue and White teams will be made up of players trying to earn a roster spot for the upcoming season, alongside top 15-year-old prospects.

Admission will be by a minimum donation of $5.

Training camp gets underway next Thursday, Sept. 2.
