Fundraising phone calls for local fire department fake

Over the past week the City of Cranbrook, along with Fire and Emergency Services, were made aware of several attempts by unnamed individuals via telephone claiming to be fundraising for the Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services.

In one particular event, a resident received a ?courtesy? call from someone claiming to be a representative of Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services reminding residents to check the batteries in their smoke alarms. The caller then asked the resident if they would like to make a donation either via mail or by providing their credit card number over the phone.

The resident wasn?t comfortable with that and asked if they could make the donation at the Fire Hall. The caller advised that making a cash donation at the Fire Hall would not be possible.

Both the City and Fire & Emergency Services advise the public that the City of Cranbrook and the Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services do not solicit funds over the phone, nor will ever ask for a credit card number.

The International Association of Fire Chiefs or the International Association of Firefighters also does not solicit funds over the phone. Residents who may have received such a phone call or have any additional questions or information about this scam, you are asked to please call Fire Hall No. 1 at 250-426-2325 or contact the RCMP.
