Cranbrook biggest garage sale, with a twist

Students at Gordon Terrace Elementary School have been pitching in to help promote Cranbrook’s inaugural Trash to Treasure Day. Pictured above, Emily Sartorel and Jamie Byram display their computer generated posters.

Watch out Saturday, Oct. 23, for what bodes to be Cranbrook's biggest ever garage sale - with a twist. The twist is that everything is free.

An inaugural "Trash to Treasure Day" is being organized by the Citizens for a Livable Cranbrook - an opportunity for the citizenry to clear out their closets and make a contribution to waste reduction.

City Council recently proclaimed October 18-24 as Waste Reduction Week. The CLC is accordingly organizing Trash to Treasure in conjunction with that.

On Oct. 23 residents are encouraged to place any "gently used" unwanted household items that are still usuable but no longer needed - such as books, bicycles, clothing, toys, or furniture - out in front of their properties.

"Everyone has things tucked away in closets and under beds that are no longer needed, but not everyone has the time to sell them," said Gerry Sobie, one of the organizers of the event.

A "T2T" sign should be clearly displayed so that treasure seekers touring around the streets will know which items are available for the taking.

By 4 p.m. later that day, all remaining items should be gathered up and taken off the street.

"We asking residents to consider taking any leftover items to the Salvation Army Thrift Store or the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop," Sobie said.

T2T signs are available to download at www.livablecranbrook.blogspot.com.
