Storm finish 2-1 on Day 1 of volleyball provincials

The No. 5 Selkirk Storm senior girls' volleyball team finished in a three-way tie atop its pool as single-A high school provincials got underway yesterday in Abbotsford.

They had a 2-1 record, but after tie-breakers were employed the Storm found themselves in second. They are scheduled to face the 14th-ranked host Abbotsford Christian Knights today at noon.

The Storm opened the tournament with a close three-set win over Cedar Community (Nanaimo). The match went 25-22, 21-25, 15-12 in their favour.

Selkirk head coach Joe Ambrosio said in an e-mail that neither team played well, attributing it to nerves.

"It was first game of the tournament for both of us," he noted.

In the Storm's second match, they faced No. 3 Credo out of Langley. The teams had split two previous meetings this season, and Thursday's game was fittingly close.

After dropping the first set 16-25, the Storm won the second by a decisive 25-15 score.

"We were tied in the third 12-12, then we ended up making two critical passing errors and one hitting error," said Ambrosio.

Credo took the win, but lost their evening match against Cedar in two sets.

Selkirk finished round robin play with a 25-19, 25-17 win over Cedars Christian (Prince George).
