NDP leader Jack Layton will spend the day in Cranbrook on January 24th.
It will be Layton's first visit to the city and he will be here to endorse Mark Shmigelsky, who was named the NDP's candidate for the Kootenay-Columbia riding last weekend.
"He phoned me after I won the nomination," said Shmigelsky, 40. "We spoke for about 20 minutes. I'm looking forward to meeting him."
Jim Abbott, the Conservative MLA for Kootenay-Columbia, will step down at the next federal election, opening up the possibilities for rival political parties.
"(Layton) is definitely committed to participating in the election in this riding and getting to a point where we can represent the people of this riding," said Shmigelsky.
While an itinerary for Layton's visit is yet to be released, Shmigelsky said they will be here from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday.
