Jane Walter, widow of the very popular RDEK Area E representative Norm Walter, who passed away this winter, won her late husband's seat on Saturday.
Walter took 259 of the 418 votes cast. Her closest competitor was Sharon Mielnichuk with 96, then Jim Westwood with 62 and Wilma Croisdale with 2.
"I'm very honoured that people chose me," Walter said Sunday. "I wanted the opportunity to finish some of the projects that Norm started. It gives me a purpose to go on."
Some of those projects include St. Mary Lake land use. Prior to his passing, Norm Walter had been in discussions with Tembec and lake residents about the former campground at the east end of the lake.
"There was an agreement that it would become a day use campground," Walter said. "But some Tembec people have changed so we have to make sure the agreement stays the same."
Another project was trying to find funding to upgrade the Wasa rink and to get provincial approval for a columbaria at Wasa.
She says Norm started a period of good communication between Area E residents and the RDEK and she wants to see that continue.
"We moved here because of the lifestyle and I want to see the Kootenays stay the Kootenays. I do not want to sacrifice our lifestyle for the sake of a dollar."
