Triple-header CD release "epic"

Three local bands will join forces this weekend to launch their albums.

60 Hertz, redGirl and Heather Gemmell will each take to the Key City Theatre stage on Saturday, June 11 from 7:30 p.m.

"Timing is everything," said James Neve, singer/songwriter for 60 Hertz. He and Mike Hepher of redGirl were talking and realised they were both putting the finishing touches on a new album. Mike pointed out that Heather Gemmell was also nearing completion of her album.

"I said, 'Maybe we should think about putting a show together. If we put something together, maybe we can create some energy and go to a bigger venue and get some real expert sound and lighting.' So that's what we decided to do," said Neve.

What's more, the three bands are offering special "deluxe tickets" to the event, called 3 For The Road. For $30, you gain entry to the concert and receive a copy of each of the three CDs. Entry alone is $15, and each album can be purchased on the night for $15 an album, so the deluxe ticket saves the buyer $30.

"It's a super deal," said Neve. "Come early, get a good seat. It's festival seating, or rush seating."

The show will be split into two halves. Each band will play a 20-minute set in each half.

"The format is going to be rather interesting," said Neve. "It's set up so it will be as seamless as possible with three drum kits on stage."

RedGirl is Michael and Anie Hepher, upright bass player Steve Jones, and percussionist Sven Heyde. Its first album is One Match Fire, which was recorded live this winter.

"The band performs precocious arrangements of some Lynn Miles, Josh Ritter, Ryan Adams songs, as well as Hepher's original pieces. RedGirl is known to share their music, their humour and their stories on stage with genuine relish," reads a press release.

Heather Gemmell is performing with her new band, The Peaks: Paul Bouchard on drums, Ray Gareau on bass and Dave Phillipe on lead guitar and vocals. The album, The Road, is a collection of Gemmell's original tunes.

"Heather writes music about what she knows to be true, and then wraps it up with a well fitted tune of her own making. Her music is built around her guitar playing talent and offers up thought-provoking lyrics, catchy riffs, and raw, youthful energy. Her voice is agile and able to go from sweet and lilting to jagged and husky in no time flat," reads the press release.

Meanwhile, Neve describes 60 Hertz's first album, Time Stands Still, as "upbeat roots and rock." Neve is vocals and guitar, David Birch is vocals and bass, Robert Young is lead guitar and Marty Musser on percussion.

The long-time musicians have been playing together in different permeations since the 1970s, but the band started in its current form two years ago. They started working on the album right away, choosing 12 tracks from a repertoire of 40 original songs.

60 Hertz pulls on influences ranging from the Beatles to Moody Blues, with lead guitar that's a little like Santana.

"It's thematically a little bit more of a rock album than some of our other material," explained Neve.

Tickets for 3 For The Show can be purchased at the Key City Theatre box office, reached at 250-426-7006.
