Davis seeking a fourth term on Council

Long-time city councillor Angus Davis has decided to run for re-election in the November 19 municipal election.

Davis is nearing the end of his third term - or ninth year - as councillor for the City of Cranbrook. Before moving here, he was mayor of Fraser Lake for 12 years, councillor for three, and administrator for 14.

"I've been involved in municipal politics for a long time," he said.

While he has pondered running for mayor in Cranbrook, Davis said he doesn't want to pursue the top job.

"In the community I was mayor of, we went through some very hard times and I was able to cope with that I think in a satisfactory way. But I'm also about 30 years older than I was then," he said.

Davis wants to retain his seat on council because he's predicting some significant discussions ahead for Cranbrook.

"With the mayor resigning and the energies the Citizens for a Livable Cranbrook have been putting into things for the last few years, I think we do know there's probably going to be a lot of discussion about the direction the city's going to be going in," he said.

There's a strong chance that the global economic crisis will have an effect on Cranbrook, and the community needs to think about how it will combat what could come.

"You have to have this in your radar. It may not happen, but I think you have to be aware that it's a possibility that things are not going to be as active economically as they were and are."

Davis is prepared to work with whoever may be elected to council beside him, knowing from his four terms as mayor that you can't predict the dynamics of a council.

"About a month into all those four terms, the people I thought I was not going to be able to get along with turned out to be your biggest allies," he remembered.

"Everybody has to figure out at some point in time - probably very early in the game - we're all in this together. There is differences of opinion and people get angry and that's life, but give a person a chance to do what they're doing because once the ink is dry on the ballots, a whole new life starts."
