It took a shootout for the Oil Kings to best the Kootenay Ice last night at the Rexall Place in Edmonton after three periods and overtime couldn't generate a result.
The Oil Kings (2-1-1-1) had trouble generating an effective powerplay, and had plenty of opportunity in the second frame, and the Ice had the same problem, generating one shot on a five-minute major after Oil Kings Griffin Reinhart was ejected for a kneeing infraction in the third.
The Kootenay squad nearly had an early lead after Adam Rossignol flipped the puck into the air, which sailed into the crease and banked off Brock Montgomery. While initially called as a goal, the referees waved it off after video review, which officials may have made based off an apparent hand motion by Montgomery.
Reinhart drew blood for the Ice halfway through the frame, on a nifty passing play between Drew McKinlay and Brendan Hurley, potting his third of the season.
TJ Foster scored for the Edmonton Club on the powerplay in the third period, evening up the score. The Oil Kings could've taken the game near the end, but Nathan Lieuwen robbed a wide-open net opportunity off a rebound from an Edmonton player.
The Kootenay squad pressed the attack in the overtime frame, owning most of the offensive pressure, but was unable to convert.
Foster opened the shootout round and was able to beat Lieuwen stickside, with Martin Gernat scoring as well, while Max and Sam Reinhart were unable to solve Oil Kings stopper Laurent Brossoit.
Despite the shootout loss, the Ice still contribute positively to the standings, earning one point and tying them with the Regina Pats and Moose Jaw Warriors.
The Ice will head south to Red Deer and take on the Rebels on Saturday night.
