New Kimberley conference centre roof needs $151,000 replacement

Kimberley City Council has voted to go ahead with a $151,000 replacement of the roof at the Kimberley Conference and Athlete Training Centre.

The roof on the brand new facility at the Kimberley Alpine Resort started leaking last spring and Mayor Jim Ogilvie says the City has been pursuing the architect and contractor ever since seeking reparation.

"We had some experts look at it and in our opinion it is the fault of both," Ogilvie said.

"The architect and contractor are going back and forth with each other, but in the meantime, nothing has been done. We had to take action. We can't afford to go through the winter with a bad roof."

Ogilvie said the issue is that the roof was not installed properly, and therefore would not be warrantied if something went wrong.

"We don't have to do the entire roof, but it is not installed properly and we wouldn't get a full warranty if something went wrong in the future, so we are replacing the whole thing."

The money will come from the reserve fund, although Ogilvie is confident that it will be reimbursed.

"Our legal people say we have a good case. But we have the money in the bank and the roof has to be fixed. In the interim, while we seek repayment, the job has to be done.
