Key City Gymnastics Club holding fundraiser for new training facility

Existing building isn't big enough to accommodate all the programs

The Key City Gymnastics Club is gearing up for a Masquerade Ball fundraiser on Saturday evening at the Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort to raise money towards a new gym facility.

The current space just isn't big enough for their 2,000 annual users, along with a membership of 600, said Brenna Baker, president of the board for the Key City Gymnastics Club.

The club currently boasts 68 athletes that compete at the provincial level, with the potential for some to eventually move up to the national level, based on performances and results, Baker added.

If those athletes manage to crack the national stage, the current facility won't be adequate enough to train them for that kind of high-level competition, said Baker.

The club has a very daunting task of raising the money needed to build a brand-new facility, which would cost approximately $1 million.

Because of the cost, the club is looking at other options, such as moving into an existing bigger building, but the board is still looking at what kind of financial support they can raise, as there is no more room to expand at the current facility.

"We're looking for the support of the community because we house so many people, adults with disabilities as well as children and youth," said Baker.

The Club is grateful for a $5,000 donation made by Ryan Dayman, a local realtor who raised $40,000 at a golf tournament in August and distributed the proceeds to eight different local sports associations and clubs.

The Masquerade Ball kicks off at 5:30 with cocktails, with a dinner, auction and dance to follow. Call the Key City Gymnastics club for more information at 250-426-2090.
