Young curlers get chance to join championship teams

Organizers behind the Capital One Canada Cup are getting in the sweep of things for the Junior Stars Program, an event which will feature 14 young curlers becoming honorary members of the championship teams coming to the Cranbrook in just under one month. Here's a chance for young local curlers to get in on the front line action at the upcoming Canada Cup of Curling, taking place at the Cranbrook Rec Plex Nov. 30 to Dec. 4.

Friday, Nov. 4, is the last day to enter the 2011 Capital One Canada Cup of Curling's Junior Stars program, which will see more 14 young curlers between the ages of 12 and 19 becoming an honorary member of one of the 14 high profile curling rinks hitting the ice.

Brenna Baker, Marketing Administrator, 2011 Capital One Canada Cup, said all it takes to enter is a 100-word story explaining why they want to be one of the stars. The entry forms are available online at www.curling.ca/championships/canadacup/activities-entertainment/junior-stars-shine-in-the-spotlight.

Baker said the selection process will take place on Monday, Nov. 7. The 14 winners become honorary members of one of the teams competing in the championship. They will get the chance to meet the team, observe them from ice-level in practice and take part in a special pre-game ceremony. And, at select championships they can go behind the scenes to meet the TSN broadcast crew and production staff.

They will also receive commemorative Junior Stars jackets, tickets to the draw when their team is highlighted - including 2 draw tickets for their parents or guardians, a 2011 Capital One Canada Cup event pin and souvenir program, and an official photograph with the team.

The Columbia Basin Trust is sponsoring the Junior Stars program.
