There is lots at stake in all sorts of story lines this week at the Canada Cup of Curling in Cranbrook. Not least is a local woman's chance to draw to the button for $250,000.

Devon Twarowski of Cranbrook is the winner of an Investors Group-sponsored "Draw to the Button" contest. Her name was drawn from among more than 1,000 ballots from across B.C. The contest takes place during the fifth end break of the Men's Final at the Capital One Canada Cup of Curling on Sunday, Dec. 4.

Investors Group is one of the local sponsors of the Canada Cup, which begins on Wednesday.

"I've been practicing all week," Twarowski said. She is unfazed by the fact she hadn't curled before in her life. Her friend Samantha Young has been giving her some excellent coaching, Twarowski said. She's been practicing her shot at the Cranbrook Curling Club, and since that venue has become unavailable, she will continue her education at the Kimberley Curling Club.

Twarowski pointed out that one of her earlier practice shots was a perfect draw to the button, and that she's going into the event with the expectation of winning it.

Twarowski will be allowed three shots when the moment arrives. Two practice slides will be allowed, but no sweepers. The rock must completely cover the button on the first shot for her to win the $250,000. If the rock only covers the pin (the exact centre of the button), she wins $10,000.

If she misses her first shot, but covers the button on her second she wins $50,000. If she only covers the pin on her second shot she wins $5,000.

On the third shot, if necessary, she wins $25,000 for covering the button, $2,500 for just covering the pin.

"We are so excited about sponsoring this event, and to have a local person qualify is the icing on the cake," said Bill Hughes, Regional Director for Investors Group Kootenay region office. "We'd love to have her win it.

Hughes said that no matter what, Twarowski will come out a winner, as a variety of prizes is guaranteed, including tickets to the men's final draw and luxury transportation to and from the event.
