A war broke out at the Kimberley Civic Centre on Friday night as the Kimberley Dynamiters cruised to a 4-1 win over their division rivals in the Fernie Ghostriders.
Referee Noah Wesche had a busy night, whistling down 42 minor and major penalties when all the dust settled at the end of the third period.
Kimberley built an early lead in the first frame, off of even-strength goals scored by Colton Vannucci and Lane Koenteges, but couldn't convert on any of three power play chances.
Austin Evans cut the deficit in half when he answered for the Riders in the second period, notching the club's only goal of the contest, even though Fernie peppered Braeden Ostepchuk with 30 shots.
Two fights broke out right off the bat in the second period, as Ty Morton and Andrew White squared off against Brett Luker and Mark Strachan. Luker also got a few additional minors for instigating and aggressing. Dylan Roberston, repping for the 'Riders and Nitro forward Bryce Perpelitz also chucked the knuckles before the period ended.
Third period fisticuffs included rounds from the Nitros' Dallin Wolf and Evan Burgess, while Zach Traverse drew a solo fighting charge and Bendan Mangone was took a major and a game ejection for a deliberate injury penalty.
Between all the roughhousing, Senate Patton and Richard Hubscher were able to score two more goals for the Nitro side, giving Kimberley the win over their first-place divisional rivals.
The Nitros outshot their opponents, putting 37 pucks on 'Riders stopper Chris Solecki, beating him three times on even strength, while Hubscher's marker was on the power play.
The win keeps the club in second place in the Eddie Mountain division, as they put some distance between themselves and the third-ranked Creston Valley Thundercats. Fernie still has a commanding lead with a seven-point spread, but Kimberley has four games in hand against the 'Riders.
Next action for the Nitros is Tuesday night, where they will face the struggling Columbia Valley Rockies, who are sitting at the bottom of the division with one win in 28 games.
