Nine unanswered goals lift Nitros over Rockies

The struggling Columbia Valley Rockies crumbled to the Kimberley Dynamiters last night, as the Nitros exploded for nine unanswered goals in the second and third period to take a 10-3 win over their Invermere-based opponents.

Rylen Duley had a stellar night for the Kimberley club, notching a hat trick by scoring one in the first period and two in the second, and both Jordan Bartusek and Taylor McDowell had two-goal nights.

The Nitro win added to the woes of the Rockies, who have won only one game in their 29-game season so far, which was against the Chase Heat, who are struggling just as bad.

To the team's credit, Columbia Valley scored first, just before the halfway mark of the first period, on a goal from Joe Colborne.

However, the Nitros responded in a spectacular fashion, scoring nine goals over the following 50 minutes, while the Rockies added two more in the third.

Bartusek opened the floodgates for the Nitros, and Duley followed soon after on a power play goal for his first of three, as the Dynamiters led 2-1 after the first frame.

Duley opened the scoring in the second period, with McDowell potting his first of two, and Duley popped in his third on a late powerplay to seal up the hattie.

Bartusek scored within the first four minutes of the third frame and Brady Revie, Jared Marchi and Senate Patton all scored before the Rockies answered with consecutive goals from Kellen Marchland and Todd Sykes.

McDowell scored his second of the night with 5:15 to go in the game, which ended the deluge of goals from the Dynamiter side of the scoreboard.

Rockies tender Travis Beekhuizen stood between the pipes for his squad for all 60 minutes, facing 39 shots, and turning away 29.

On the other end of the rink, Jeremy Mousseau earned the win for the Nitros, stopping 23 of 26 pucks that the Rockies shot at him.

Despite the offensive dominance by Kimberley, the Rockies managed to outshoot them in the second period, but the Nitros nearly doubled the shots over Columbia Valley in the first and third frames.

Richard Hubscher was held off in the goals department, but he earned two assists, and Owen Solecki had a productive night, with three helpers to his assist column. Colton Vannucci, Bryce Perpelitz and Brett Luker each collected two assists to pad their stats.

The Nitros will face the Kamloops Storm on Friday at the Kimberley Civic Centre before heading up to Invermere for a rematch against the Rockies on Saturday night.
