Nitros suffer through rough road trip

Three games in three nights on the road proved to be a little much for the Kimberley Dynamiters, despite initial success in their first meeting.

The Nitros traveled to Chase, beating the struggling Heat 9-3, but dropped their next two games against the Kamloops Storm and Revelstoke Grizzlies, at scores of 6-3 and 13-3.

Even though the Nitros scored nine goals in Chase on Friday night, the Heat kept up to the Dynamiters in shots, ending the game with 39, one below their opponents.

Special teams was on fire for the Dynamiters, as the club converted on four of seven attempts on the man-advantage, while holding off the Heat on all seven of their powerplays.

Rylan Duley had a six-point night, scoring four goals and notching two assists, while Senate Patton had a goal and five assists.

The Nitros scored the only goal in the first period on an effort from Rylan Duley, and doubled their lead early in the second period.

Austin Hirano responded for his club but Duley put his second of the night into the net on the powerplay.

Isaac Willard and Owen Barker both scored to tie up the game by the halfway mark of the frame, but it was all Nitro from then on.

Duley scored his third for his hat trick, and Richard Hubscher and Patton all put pucks off the twine by the period's end.

Jordan Revie, Duley and Jordan Bartusek all scored in the third to seal up an emphatic road win for the club.

The Dynamiters traveled to Kamloops to challenge the high-flying Storm for Saturday's game, dropping a 6-3 decision despite holding the lead after the first period.

Duley and Hubscher both scored powerplay goals in the first 20 minutes, but the Storm cut the deficit in half 14 seconds before the buzzer went, on a goal from Ryan Skinner.

Kamloops scored again halfway through the second on a goal from Chase Edwards, but the Nitros pulled ahead a few minutes later on a powerplay goal from Tyson Valette.

However, it was all Storm for the rest of the game, as Mattia Bortolotto and Briar McNaney scored before the second period ended. McNaney added a powerplay and empty net goal in the third to sink any hope of a Nitro comeback.

Braden Ostepchuck stood between the pipes for the Nitros, facing 39 shots and turning away 34. His team managed to put 34 shots on opposing goaltender Marcus Beesley.

The Nitro powerplay continued to be successful, scoring on three of eight opportunities, but the Storm's special teams was also clicking, drawing blood on three of seven man-advantages.

The Nitros followed their loss to the Storm by getting mauled 13-3 in Revelstoke on Sunday afternoon.

The Nitros scored first on a goal from Olli Dickson, but Riley Spraggs tied up the game close to the halfway mark of the opening period. Jordan Bledsoe put the Grizzlies ahead by one and Spraggs added a second goal before Duley responded with a goal on a shorthanded effort. However, Braden Monk put the Grizzlies ahead by one to end the first period with a 4-2 score.

Six unanswered goals-three on the powerplay-came from the Grizzlies in the second period, which started with a marker by Cole Sanford with a man-advantage roughly five minutes into the frame.

Austin Donaldson, Michael Robers Darnel St. Pierre and Kyle Schwartz all scored as well, along with a second goal from Sanford, to give the Grizzlies a commanding 10-2 lead.

Hubscher managed to respond for the Nitros early in the third on a powerplay, but Roberts, Sanford and Schwartz all added more goals onto the scoreboard to end the game with a 13-3 final.

Braeden Ostepchuk started in net, getting yanked after the Grizzlies' fourth goal in the first period, with Jeremy Mousseau stepping in for relief that never materialized.

While the weekend action may not have been ideal for the Nitros, they still sit a win behind the Fernie Ghostriders in the Eddie Mountain division with three games in hand.

The Nitros will return to the Civic Centre on Wednesday to host the Columbia Valley Rockies.
