Nitros fall to Nitehawks, maul Grizzlies

The Kimberley Dynamiters split their weekend KIJHL action, dropping a 6-3 decision against the league-leading Beaver Valley Nitehawks, but rebounding with a 6-3 win over the Revelstoke Grizzlies.

Before meeting the Nitros, the Nitehawks were riding a five-game win streak with a firm grip on first place in the Neil Murdoch division.

The 'Hawks proved to be a tough opponent, scoring five goals before the Dynamiters organized a response in the Friday night contest in Fruitvale.

Mason Spear opened the scoring right at the end of the first period, and Ryan Edwards and Justin Niminiken scored within a minute of each other just as the second period got underway.

Spear added his second of the game with five minutes to go, and Christian Johnson added to the damage with 47 seconds to go on the clock.

Senate Patton broke the scoreless spell for the Dynamiters and Jordan Revie and Taylor McDowell scored on separate powerplays.

Craig Martin potted an empty net goal to seal up the scoring for the contest.

The Nitros outshot their opponents in two periods, pasting 39 pucks on Mike Vlanich, while Braeden Ostepchuk got chased from the net after 40 minutes, with Jeremy Mousseau stepping in for relief.

The Nitros were given six opportunities on the man-advantage, capitalizing on the two third-period goals from Revie and McDowell.

The Dynamiters returned to the Civic Centre on Saturday night and mauled the Revelstoke Grizzlies 6-4, earning some vengeance against a team that embarrassed them 13-3 last weekend.

Despite an initial lead by the Grizzlies, the Nitros came back to overtake the scoring by the end of the first period.

Tyler Bolduc put Revelstoke up on the board within the first three minutes, but Rylan Duley and Patton both answered for the Nitros by the end of the frame.

The bulk of the game's scoring occurred in the second period; Cole Sanford scored twice for the Grizzlies along with a marker by Marc Letourneau, while McDowell and Mark Strachan responded for the Nitros.

Connor Kutzner broke the tie in the third period and Colton Vannucci added an empty net goal with eight seconds left to solidify the win.

Both teams were even in the shot count; Mousseau played the full 60 minutes between the pipes for the Nitros, making 32 saves.

Next action for the Nitros will be against the Rockets in Golden on Tuesday night. The Spokane Braves will travel to the Civic Centre on Friday night for the next Nitro home game.
