Babysitter attempts suicide

The woman charged with the murder of one-year-old Iyanna Teeple has tried to kill herself.

The news broke during Tammy Bouvette's sentencing in Cranbrook Provincial Court on Monday, February 20, for breaching the terms of her bail.

According to Crown counsel, Bouvette, 28, was out on bail on February 7 when RCMP were called to a domestic disturbance at an apartment in Cranbrook.

When police arrived, they were met by Bouvette's friend, who told them he was trying to stop her from harming herself.

Bouvette was arrested and taken to Cranbrook's hospital. In the process, RCMP noticed that she was showing signs of impairment. Her bail conditions state that she can't be in the possession of or consume alcohol.

She was released from the hospital the next morning and taken into police custody. Her bail was revoked and she is now detained at Surrey Pre-Trial Centre.

On Monday, Bouvette appeared via a video link from Surrey to plead guilty to the breach of recognizance charge for drinking alcohol.

It is the second breach she has pleaded guilty to since she was arrested in October and essentially placed on house arrest in November.

As a result, Crown counsel asked the judge to sentence Bouvette to up to 60 days jail.

Bouvette's lawyer, William Thorne, asked the judge to limit the sentence to 30 days with credit for the time she has spent in custody between February 7 and 20.

Judge Grant Sheard agreed with Thorne, sentencing Bouvette to a total of 30 days. She has served 13 of those days waiting for the sentencing, so she has another 17 days remaining.

It's a moot point, since Bouvette won't have a new bail hearing until March 26.

In appealing for leniency, Thorne told Sheard that Bouvette is a mother of four and she has been prohibited from seeing her children since her arrest.

"It has been very difficult on her - there's no question about it," said Thorne.

Bouvette spoke on her own behalf: "I'm having really serious issues with myself at the moment with the alcohol but I plan on getting treatment," she said.

She was arrested last October and charged with second-degree murder after the death of 19-month-old Iyanna Teeple.

Iyanna drowned in the bathtub on May 26 last year while Bouvette was babysitting her.

A psychiatric assessment has been performed on Bouvette, but it is protected by a publication ban.
