Spectator sports for Sam Steele Days
Sam Steele Days is coming up and there will be all kinds of spectator events—including sports—happening throughout the community over the next three days.
Sam Steele Ball Tournament
A staple for the Sam Steele weekend celebrations is the ball tournament, which will be hosted by the Kinsmen Quads and the Moir Park ball fields. Run by a group of local organizations, the ball tournament will funnel excess funds into upgrading equipment at local ball diamonds. There are three divisions: Mixed Competitive, Mixed Recreational and Mixed over 50. Games will be going all day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
East Kootenay Volleyball Club tournament
Head up to the College of the Rockies for some beach volleyball right beside the track this weekend, as the East Kootenay Volleyball Club is hosting a tournament for the first time in Sam Steele history. Spectators are welcome to check out the action, as teams will be in action for all three days. Starting on Thursday, June 9th, the U14 teams will go from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. The U16 will run at the same times on Friday. The U18 and Adult Open will run all day Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Balls of Steele Bocce tournament
The Balls of Steele bocce tournament is another sport where spectators can watch costumed teams duke it out in the bocce pits at Baker Park all day on Saturday. The first games start at 11 a.m. and games will run all the way till 10 p.m.
KEYSA youth soccer tournament
All day Saturday and Sunday is the annual Sam Steele KEYSA youth soccer tournament, which features teams from the East and West Kootenay, Alberta and the U.S. coming together to clash at the Moir Park soccer fields. There are both boys and girls teams from ages 13-18, and the Sunrise Rotary Rotary Club will be running the concession at the clubhouse.
Since being introduced over 10 years ago, the Strongman Competition has become a fan favourite, drawing huge crowds along 10th Ave. by Rotary Park as athletes demonstrate amazing feats of strength. Events this year include; the truck pull, atlas stones, loading event, car deadlift, metal log press and the medley – super yolk and the carry & drag. The event kicks off at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
